HOT WALKING

Here's what I posted on Facebook today:

You've heard about HOT YOGA? Well, welcome to HOT WALKING. Drink lots of water. Eat an orange for electrolytes. Walk mindfully.

It's not that it's foolish to be working out in the kind of heat we have today (43C/109F) but we need to be mindful of the stress it places on our bodies.

When we sweat a lot, we excrete important electrolytes that keep our brain, heart and entire physiological system working well. Mangoes, bananas, and oranges are all high in the electrolyte potassium. Eat one of these and drink water before you go outside for your workout. Eat another when you return post-workout.

Above all, your workout should make you feel good!

Strength move for walking boot camp

Sample moves from the Prevention Walking Boot Camp

Side plank with sway. Can be done on the ground for greater challenge or from elbow or even higher elevation for less challenge.

Burpee with three options. Jump out half way, jump out to plank, step out to plank and return to standing.

Squat with leg abduction (side leg press). For greater challenge place one foot on a curb or elevated spot (stair, low bench)

Standing bird dog: Lift leg as high as possible, reach arms forward. Keep belly button pulled in toward spine for all phases of the exercise.
