Big Sur warm up

It's 10 degrees cooler in California than it is in Ontario (!) but we're still sooooo excited to be here for the Big Sur Marathon tomorrow.

You can see Vera here leading some of us through a post-walk walk stretch on the Carmel Beach.

Last night a few of us went to watch a special showing of Running the Sahara with guest Charlie Engel, who organized the expedition to run across the entire Sahara Desert with two other runners (including Candian Ray Zahab). At one point in the movie when one of the other two runners is considering dropping out of the race, Charlie suggests that he could go back home to play it safe and easy by running a marathon! And that's about how we feel after watching them slogging it without one day rest for 111 days through unimaginable heat, drought, injury, sand storms, exhaustion, and mental fatigue.

The hills of the Big Sur course are looking a whole lot easier!

We had a fabulous few days in Carmel and thoroughly enjoyed the race. The consensus was we could never have done it without Vera's hill training class and I think we all said a silent thank you after each hill. We received many compliments on our technigue thoughout the race including "We have heard about you fast Canadians" and "You guys are like a well oiled machine."

So thank you again Vera for the training and working with us to fine tune our style so that we got the most possible out of the race. It is amazing how over time we forget some of the basics.

Congratulations to all who did the race. I can see why Big Sur has a WOW rating of 4 star out of 4. I will always have a special place in my heart for this race. It was a fun one!

Hi Nancy,

All that hilly torture works doesn't it!?

A few gazillion hill repeats in freezing Ontario are all forgotten when walking the Big Sur coastline!

Hi Ray,

Thanks for your congrats. You were there in spirit...we watched the special screening of Running the Sahara. I think the Big Sur temperatures would be too moderate for you!
